Autodesk Mudbox – A New Toy

progress on experimentation of Autosesk Mudbox

Willie Nelson-Mudbox Sculpture

I have been using ZBrush for a while and thought I would give Mudbox a try. I find it a bit limited in capacity to ZBrush but it wins hands down on user-friendliness.

By way of explanation to those that haven’t heard of these packages, Mudbox and ZBrush software  both utilize a digital lump of clay and, using available tools, sculpting this clay to create lifelike models.

The finished sculpture can be imported into Autodesk 3DS Max, Autodesk Maya and any other software that uses the .obj format. Texturing can go down to amazing detail and skin tones can be applied for added realism. To give you an idea of what I mean, follow this link to see the work in the ZBrush galleries and be amazed!

I have started a sculpture of the legendary singer, Willie Nelson to get my head around the Mudbox software and will share the progress and any observations here in my blog. You can find out more about Mudbox from here. I used Willie Nelson because of his weathered skin textures and wrinkles –  a fun challenge. Keep dropping by to see the progress and please leave a comment.
